Hudson Civic Center
The Hudson Civic Center is a transformative project designed by Studio EA to unify two distinct ice arenas into a cohesive, community-centered facility. Located in Hudson, this revitalized space serves as a hub for local recreation, sports, and community engagement. The design focuses on connecting the existing ice rinks through a spacious, dynamic lobby that not only facilitates the flow of visitors but also serves as a social and functional heart of the center.
At the core of the design was the need to integrate complex existing structural systems while maintaining a cost-effective approach. The challenge of merging two separate ice arenas into a single, cohesive structure was met with creative solutions that respect the building's original bones while introducing modern amenities and a clear sense of place. A key feature of the project is the expansive lobby, which acts as a central gathering area for spectators and players alike. This space offers seamless transitions between the two ice areas, creating a comfortable environment for both active use and casual interaction.
The facility also addresses the needs of tournament players by including dedicated "hangout" spaces for athletes, as well as upgraded concessions areas that enhance the overall visitor experience. The design prioritizes accessibility by incorporating features such as an elevator, ramps to the bleachers, and fully accessible locker rooms—ensuring the center is welcoming to individuals of all abilities.
The finished project marries form and function in a way that reinforces the Hudson Civic Center’s role as a vital asset to the community. By thoughtfully addressing both the structural challenges and the social needs of the space, Studio EA has created a venue that is flexible, sustainable, and deeply connected to the people it serves.
